Gender and Diplomacy

With the support of a grant from Koç University Center for Gender Studies, I have analyzed the position of women and gender in Turkish diplomacy, jointly with Rahime Suleymanoglu-Kurum. A chapter on the status of women in Turkish diplomacy, based on data on diplomatic appointments and rank obtained from Turkish Foreign Ministry has been published in the edited volume Gendering Diplomacy and International Negotiation. An article (in Turkish) situating Turkish diplomacy in the global patterns of increasing representation of women in diplomacy has been published in Uluslararası İlişkiler. In the following phase of our research, we have conducted interviews with Turkish diplomats in order to identify gendered practices in Turkish diplomacy. In an article just published in the Hague Journal of Diplomacy, we argued that  a shift in gender performances are under way among Turkish women diplomats, from female masculinity being the dominant form towards hegemonic femininity becoming more common.
