Research

In broad terms, my research focuses on how concerns about identity and security intersect in international politics. I have delved at this question from multiple angles in the context of literatures on European identity, liminality and foreign policy (with a focus on Turkish foreign policy), comparative regionalism, ontological security studies, and conflict resolution and identity change. In addition, I have contributed to the literatures on civil society and citizenship in Turkey and Europe, and recently been involved in research on normative hierarchies and gender and diplomacy. My most recent research focuses on the existentialist notion of anxiety as a springboard to conceptualize the effects of ontological insecurity and uncertainty in international relations.
