What is Sun and Planet Gear Mechanism?
The sun and planet gear was a method of converting vertical motion to rotary motion. The Scottish engineer William Murdoch, an employee of Boulton and Watt invented the system, but was patented by James Watt in October 1781. It was invented to bypass the patent on the crank, already held by James Pickard.
What is the mechanism of Sun and Planet Gear Wheels?
As we said previously, the sun and planer gear converted reciprocating motion which is driven by a steam engine to circular motion using the planet gear. The planet gear is attached rigidly at the end of the connecting rod of the engine. The other gear which is sun gear fixed to the drive shaft, so rotary motion is generated by that gear. The important difference using the two gears instead of a simple cranks that when both sun and planet have the same number of teeth, the drive shaft completes two revolutions for each double stroke of the beam instead of one. Since the planet gear rigidly fixed to the connected rod, it does not rotate its own axis. Also, the planet gear and sun gear’s axles are tied by a link that rotates around axis of the sun gear freely and keeps the planet gear bounded with the sun gear but does not able to generate the drive torque.
What is the usage of the Sun and Planet Gear Wheel?
Since the sun and planet gear wheel is invented 18th century, it played an important part in the development of devices for rotation in the Industrial Revolution.
Today it is widely used refrigerator compressor, a wind turbine idea, Francis turbine and locomotive.
