Geneva drives are used in the systems where a rotational intermittent motion is desired. These mechanisms translate the rotational continuous motion into a rotary intermittent motion. The first use of this mechanism was in Geneva, the Swiss capital by the first watchmakers. They implemented this system in their mechanical watches, and from then they have been used in numerous places, such as movie projectors, banknote counting machines, CNC machines etc.<

Our particular drive is an external Geneva drive, which consisting three motions in total. The first two intermittent motions are the same with same velocities and accelerations, whereas the third motion is the reversing motion. This last motion brings the system to its initial position and keeps the system continuous.

For this project we were assigned with group of three: Cenk Üstündağ & Deniz Sayınbaş & Özgür Mahir Aras. Our TA was İsmail Enes Yiğit. He led us in the project and helped us with the problems we encounter during the process.

In this part we aimed to draw the parts in a CAD program to manufacture them later. The information that we have been given was actually enough to decide the angles of the pins and grooves, and the relationship between the gears. However, we wanted to look for alternative relationships in order to make our calculations easier in the analysis. We came up with different results and at the end of the day we decided to choose the easiest numbers, such as 90-60-30 triangles and 1:2 ratios between the gears.

After deciding the relations, we started the design part. Luckily the parts were not difficult to draw as they only consist of relatively simple geometries. We used SolidWorks in this process, as it was easy to use for this project and its tools were more user-friendly according to us. When we drew the parts, made the assembly in SolidWorks and saw the system working in the Motion Analysis we were finished with the design part. This process took more than a month since we did not know how to start this project and could not decide where to start.
