The creation of linkages to change circular motion to straight-line motion was an important engineering problem of the 19th century.

This eight-link linkage was the one of the first to produce exact straight -line motion.

It was the first planar linkage capable of transforming rotary motion into perfect straight-line motion, and vice versa.

Until this invention, no planar method existed of producing straight motion without reference guide ways, making the linkage especially important as a machine component and for manufacturing. The Peaucellier linkage was important in the development of the steam engine.
