Objectives:

This project aims to analyze a planetary gear system.

Main intention of performing such an analysis of planetary gear system is enhancing the engineering skills of mechanical engineering students.

Analysis process of a planetary gear system is investigated in six main subtitles, such as Research, Design, Manufacturing and Assembly, Analysis and Experimental Results, Discussion, and Conclusion.

Following the reference articles which are stated at the conclusion part we started to work on designing the planetary gear system. However the main difficulty that we have confronted during the design process is being not able to find some specific data such as phase angle between teeth. Since this information does not exist in the reference article, we faced many problems during manufacturing process due to the failure in design process. We tried to design different systems with different number of teeth, in order to find the desirable system.

After we have done with the design of each part, we tried to give motion to whole system. Checking the system in CAD program is important because it provides us a chance to prevent any possible problem that we could confront later in manufacturing process. We worked a lot on motion analysis of the system because we could not set the gear ratios between gears properly. Therefore each time problems emerge about giving simultaneous motion to the gears. As we gave motion to the sun gear, outer gears did not rotate at proper rpm.

During the motion analysis we realized the gap between the teeth of sun gear and planet gears. Then we concluded that the gap between the teeth, which is called backlash, is one of the main reasons of failure in simultaneous motion in CAD program. Another reason of failure in motion analysis is that we could not set the external variables, such as weight of the outer gear2 in computer aided design program. Since the weight of outer gear applies force to the carrier plate of ring gear, it creates friction between ring gear and carrier plate of outer gear2. However impact of weight of outer gear could not be set in the design program.
