Group 10: Autocam Scissors

The project is called as autocam scissors. The purpose of them mechanism is to convert the rotational motion to linear motion and cutting. The mechanism is used to cut something with the help of motor which rotates the disk and rollers (fixed the disk), and rollers rotates the blades so the process is completed.

In this project, all of the parts except slider home manufactured from Plexiglas by using laser cutting machine. There are several reasons by choosing Plexiglas as our main material. It is workable, light and cheap. Slider home is manufactured by using 3D printer. The reason is that the thickness of this part is not appropriate for laser cutting. We have used a stepper motor with Torque rating of up to 3Nm.

First, we have defined the function of the disk. This was the starting point of this project. The function is r=55.2*(1.4-sin (t)) mm

Then we designed another disc to place the back of the disc with cardioid function. Designing the blades are the most difficult part. The reason is that we don’t have any dimensions ( there is no such a device in real life). It was important for blades not to be intersected along y-direction.

Then, we designed the rollers which have to be harmonious with the blades.

Then there was slider which let blades make linear motion along x- direction.

The last one we designed was sliding home, which is the part carrying the system along x- axis.
