The quick return mechanism is a system that converts circular motion into linear motion. The mechanism consists of a link attached to a rotating disc that moves at a controlled constant speed.

Quick return mechanism is widely used at rotary engines, saw machines, water pumping systems and shaping machines.

Design Process

First, we designed our Whitworth quick return mechanism different than previous projects by using Siemens NX. In recent projects, we observed that the slider was going out of the pin so we designed our pin as higher and calculated height difference between gear and the slider to preventing going out. Then, we manufactured the Whitworth mechanism piece by piece by laser cut. We used Plexiglas with thickness between 5-10 mm because we wanted to have a lightweight mechanism to have a small rpm motor so we would pay less for the motor. Later on, we assembled our parts in machine shop with the aid of Muzaffer Abi.
